I first want to give a big congratulations to the Minnesota Lynx who are the 2011 WNBA Champions!!! I decided to complete a little experiment of my own this weekend. First thing to understand about me is how big of a sports fan I am. Any and all kinds of sports male or female. Doesn't matter. I love the thrill of the game. It wasn't until the Lynx won the championship, that I truly realized what a patriarchal society we live in.
I went around town boasting about the win. I asked friends, family, and even complete strangers what they thought. I can count on one hand the amount of people who actually knew of the win. The other responses I received were based on the "upcoming Vikings game". Why is society all about men? We should be celebrating such an amazing accomplishment for women. This is a huge accomplishment people!
Today, I am definitely feeling like women are the oppressed gender :(
I was sitting in the airport (in Atlanta, ironically) refreshing my phone every few seconds, following the last 4 minutes of the last game. Woo-hoo! Go Lynx! :-)
