Assignment 13

Some people view immigration as an ever growing problem in our county. According to Newman, “immigration has a profound effect on the population in the years to come” (p 428). I look at immigration as a wonderful opportunity for our culture and society to grow and flourish.
My immigration story begins with my grandmother (on my mother’s side). My grandmother and her family lived in Hamburg, Germany. Her mother was from Berlin and her dad was from a small town called Burg (by Mageburg). My grandmother is the only child of my great-grandparents. My grandmother lived all over Germany throughout the early years of her life. When she was thirties she met my grandfather Joe. He was serving in the United States Army during WWII, as a Sergeant First Class.  After seeing one another for some time, he asked my grandmother to marry him. Not long after, they married and moved to Chicago, IL in 1966 soon after my mother and uncle were born.

The other side of my family originated from Italy (on my father’s side). My grandmother and her family originated from Venice, and my grandfather and his family from Rome. No two families were more different then the two of theirs. They met at Syracuse University in Florence Italy. Shortly after graduation, they married and moved to Chicago, IL where they then had my dad and two uncles.
